ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery is a medical procedure that is performed to reconstruct a torn ACL in the knee. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves making small incisions in the knee to allow for the insertion of an arthroscope (a small camera) and surgical instruments. The surgeon will then use the arthroscope to visualize the inside of the knee and remove the damaged ACL. Once the damaged tissue is removed, the surgeon will then insert the graft and secure it in place with screws or other fixation devices.
Following ACL surgery, patients will typically need to undergo a period of rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility in the knee. This may include physical therapy exercises, as well as the use of crutches or other assistive devices to help protect the knee during the healing process. In most cases, patients can expect to return to normal activities within six to nine months following surgery.
